Firefighters Put Out Brush Fires in Mission and Bayview

Officials said the fire started in a grassy area outside of the house, then climbed up the side of the structure and into an attic.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA: A small grass fire damaged an adjacent home in San Francisco's Bayview District this afternoon, firefighters said. The incident, at 1102 Gilman Ave., was announced via Twitter at 4:22 p.m.

San Francisco Fire Department spokesman Jonathan Baxter said the fire started in a grassy area outside of the house, then climbed up the side of the structure and into an attic.

Firefighters had the incident under control by 4:37 p.m. No injuries were reported, but it was unclear whether the residents would be displaced, according to Baxter. Another small grass fire was reported at 3:48 p.m. in the vicinity of Potrero Avenue and 20th Street.

The fire was burning in heavy shrubbery, Baxter said, climbing a hillside toward U.S. Highway 101. Firefighters had the incident under control just after 4 p.m. That fire did not appear to be malicious in nature. No injuries were reported and no residents were displaced.

An unrelated structure fire in Visitacion Valley, however, left a burn victim in critical condition. Despite several fires reported in San Francisco this afternoon, Baxter called the call volume "normal."

"We're just trying to remind everybody that grass is still flammable," Baxter said. He also advised residents to keep barbecues five to 10 feet away from structures or vegetation that could catch fire, and keep a water source or fire extinguisher nearby.
