Longtime French Eatery Closes In SF: Report

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A popular Bay Area French restaurant has closed after nearly half a century in business, according to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle.

Café Jacqueline served the San Francisco area for 46 years before closing on Dec. 20, according to the report.

The restaurant at 1454 Grant Ave. was operated by Jacqueline Margulis, who made every soufflé by hand, according to the report.

It's unclear exactly why the restaurant closed. Margulis, who is 90, told the Chronicle that if someone were interested in taking over the area and putting souffles on the menu, she'd be glad to help them out, according to the report.

Café Jacqueline was a renowned eatery, and dinners there were described in the Michelin Guide as a "special affair unmatched in its romanticism."

"Café Jacqueline is a restaurant from another time, but for those who appreciate its eccentricities, it’s a total treasure," according to the Michelin Guide. "Savory and sweet soufflés big enough for two make up the entirety of the menu, but getting one requires endurance."
