SAN FRANCISCO, CA — If you’re a fan of both metal and symphony orchestra music, you’ll want to buy tickets now to the Sept. 6 performance of Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony at the Chase Center — with a second show on Sept. 8.

“Symphony and Metallica,” also known as S&M, was a live album produced and conducted in 1999 by the late American composer, Michael Kamen. The album was a collaboration of Metallica songs in accompaniment with the San Francisco symphony. While the collection of music was first met with skepticism by critics, the album sold over 2.5 million copies in the first year, and over 8 million copies sold worldwide by 2013.

In 2001, Metallica, the San Francisco Symphony, and Kamen won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for their incredible performance of “The Call of Ktulu,” which was the closing song on Metallica’s second studio album, “Ride the Lightning.”

Twenty years after the release of the album, Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony will be performing live for the first time. The performance will include Kamen’s musical arrangements off the album, as well as renditions of new Metallica and SF Symphony songs.

Lars Ulrich, Metallica’s drummer, recently said that fans of S&M can expect to hear something new instead of just a copycat performance of the original album – “And I think that is the METALLICA spirit — of continuing this sort of quest forward rather than being tied down to the past."

San Francisco Symphony fans will be in for a treat, when Michael Tilson Thomas helps to conduct the concert, as he kicks off what will be his final season as the symphony’s music director — after joining the SFS in 1995. Tilson shares his enthusiasm about the concert, “I’m happy to join with my friends in Metallica to make this an extraordinary only-in-San Francisco music event.”
