SAN FRANCISCO, CA — As we head into the new week, we've rounded up the stories you may have missed Saturday and Sunday to prepare you for Monday.

But before we jump into Northern California's top stories, residents should expect temperatures on the rise this week. In fact, some inland areas could see the low 100s, according to the National Weather Service.

"Warming into the late week," NWS San Francisco forecasters wrote Monday. "Moderate heat risk in the inland areas Thursday-Saturday. Slight cooling into the weekend, but still warm into the next work week."

In other news, a missing mother and baby were found dead in a submerged vehicle; a man was arrested in connection to the killing of his father-in-law; a man was sentenced for a murder-for-hire scheme; police released a sketch of a suspect who violently sexually assaulted a woman; and Northern California's first human West Nile virus case of the year was confirmed.

Plus, animal rights advocates are demanding Trader Joe's to stop purchasing chickens from Petaluma Poultry, a subsidiary of poultry giant Perdue Foods that they accuse of extreme animal cruelty, including boiling birds alive and leaving them without food or water. Trader Joe's, which is headquartered in Monrovia, had sought to ban protests inside and outside its 205 California stores, but a judge recently denied the bid to ban protests outside the stores.
