SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Created and executive produced by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, Netflix’s sci-fi thriller, “The OA,” premiered in 2016 with a fascinating premise centering around a young woman named Prairie Johnson. Played by Marling, Johnson returns home to her adoptive parents ten years after her disappearance, introducing herself as “The OA.” Mysteriously, she can see despite having been blind when she left home.

After a two-year hiatus, the series returns with a second season, “Part II,” that is expected to be more thought-provoking and more daring than the first one. This time around, the show’s setting is San Francisco, where supernatural and divine forces converge to solve a mystery with a touch of noir. Some key elements include a perplexing mansion, mind-bending dimensional travel, and an unforgettable talking octopus. Last but not the least, San Francisco Bay Area’s very own star, Zendaya, also makes an appearance.

What does Marling think of the San Francisco weather? She couldn’t help but echo its mystique.

“I love that the climate changes at least ten times in a day,” Marling said. “That’s actually great for filming because you never get stuck with a rainy day. Usually, if you just break for 20 minutes, the sky will part, and you’ll get sunshine again, and you can keep shooting.”

And as for the plot of “Part II,” Batmanglij gladly chimed in.

“It’s not like any other Season Two in the sense that it’s not like Part I,” the director said. “Part II” is its own distinct thing. It’s in a brand new city, and it’s a continuing story. But it’s also a brand new story.”
