📰 News we're reading

1. 14 Injured When Cable Car Comes To Abrupt Stop In SF: Fire Officials (patch.com) — San Francisco riders were hurt when a California Street cable car suddenly stopped Monday afternoon, injuring 14 people with minor to moderate injuries, according to fire officials. The incident near Leavenworth and Hyde streets prompted a large ambulance response, traffic delays, and an ongoing investigation, with authorities urging people to avoid the area.

2. To make way for the next generation, S.F. supes call for tighter term limits (sfchronicle.com) — San Francisco leaders and young Democratic activists are pushing a charter amendment that would cap supervisors and the mayor at a lifetime maximum of eight years in office, closing a long-used loophole. If approved by the Board of Supervisors, the proposal could go before city voters as soon as June, aiming to open more room for younger candidates and fresh political voices.

3. At S.F. city hearing, Navy says: Don't panic about plutonium (missionlocal.org) — San Francisco officials pressed the U.S. Navy over a year-long delay in reporting elevated plutonium readings at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, even as experts stressed the levels pose minimal health risk. City health leaders and the EPA say regulators—not the Navy—should decide what’s safe, vowing closer oversight as cleanup continues near surrounding homes and artist studios.

4. S.F.'s famous Bay Bridge lights to return in March, with twice the illumination (sfchronicle.com) — Bay Bridge commuters between Oakland and San Francisco can expect a brighter, revamped Bay Lights 360 display starting around March, featuring 50,000 durable LEDs on the western span. The nonprofit Illuminate says the new installation will be visible from San Francisco’s southern neighborhoods and designed to delight drivers without causing dangerous distractions.
