📰 News we're reading

1. ‘The best place to hear live music in San Francisco' is closing down (mercurynews.com) — One of San Francisco’s most beloved indie music venues, Bottom of the Hill in Potrero Hill, will close at the end of 2026 after a 35-year run. Owners plan a “victory lap” year of special shows, inviting fans from across the city and Bay Area to come back, share memories, and give the club a loud farewell before its final New Year’s Eve gig.

2. Military flare found at S.F. beach is safely detonated, authorities say (sfchronicle.com) — A military marine flare that washed up on Ocean Beach in San Francisco was safely detonated in place Sunday evening after bomb squads and fire crews shut down part of the shoreline. The device was found near Vicente Street, just north of the San Francisco Zoo, and drew in local agencies along with experts from Travis Air Force Base.

3. NFL Honors Taps Major Emmy-Winning Actor as Host in 2026 (mandatory.com) — San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts will host the 2026 NFL Honors on February 5, bringing a nationally televised awards show and plenty of star power to the city. Emmy-winning actor Jon Hamm will emcee the celebration of the 2025 NFL season, including a new award for offensive linemen, with the primetime event airing on NBC, NFL Network, Peacock, and NFL+.

4. Analysis: Bench helps No. 7 Gonzaga erase early deficit, speed off on extended run to beat LMU 82-47 (bellinghamherald.com) — San Francisco hoops fans get a quick shoutout here: Gonzaga’s leading scorer Braden Huff last missed double figures against USF in the 2025 WCC semifinals, and he was held under 10 again as No. 7 Gonzaga crushed LMU 82-47. A deep Zags bench erased an early 10-point deficit with a huge first-half run and cruised behind balanced scoring and stifling defense.

5. Bay Area Congressional Reps Rip Trump's Military Action In Venezuela As 'Unconstitutional' And 'Illegal' (patch.com) — San Francisco residents are being urged to join Bay Area protests after President Trump ordered a surprise military operation in Venezuela and detained Nicolas Maduro, drawing sharp criticism from local members of Congress. Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco and other regional representatives are condemning the move as unconstitutional, warning it sets a dangerous precedent for unchecked presidential war powers and possible long-term occupation.
