Anti-Abortion Climber Arrested At Top Of SF's Salesforce Tower

The climber, self-described as the Pro-Life Spiderman, is in San Francisco police custody. His climb was a protest of a DC-area doctor.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — An anti-abortion protester who was seen climbing the Salesforce Tower in San Francisco on Tuesday morning made it to the top and has been arrested by the San Francisco Police Department, according to officials.

The incident has been resolved, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

The man's name is Maison DesChamps, who calls himself the "Pro-Life Spiderman," according to his Instagram account.

In a video posted to his Instagram during the climb, DesChamps said he was protesting what he described as five "late-term abortions" conducted by Dr. Cesare Santangelo from Washington D.C. In the post, he called for Santangelo to be arrested.

DesChamps' climb comes a day after a U.S. Supreme Court draft opinion that would overturn Roe vs. Wade was leaked. If the precedent set in Roe vs. Wade is overturned, abortion would be banned or heavily restricted in 26 states either immediately or shortly after the decision is officially handed down. It is possible for justices to change their votes before a decision is finalized.

Video from a Twitter user inside the 60-floor tower showed DesChamps free climbing the tower using beams outside the building's windows.

"Out of control," the Twitter user said while laughing. "My man's crushing it outside."

The San Francisco Fire Department expressed a different viewpoint, emphasizing the risk DesChamps placed on emergency personnel and the general public and condemning his actions in a social media post. Fire officials were asking people to stay away from the building, and the street was closed off.

Video posted by another Twitter user showed him climbing from floor to floor using beams lining the windows and supporting himself on ledges at each floor.

With a roof height of 970 feet and overall height of 1,070 feet, Salesforce Tower is the tallest skyscraper in San Francisco. It is the 12th-tallest in the United States and second-tallest west of the Mississippi River. The tower, formerly known as the Transbay Tower, was completed in 2018.

The tower is located at 415 Market St. in downtown San Francisco.
