San Francisco Among 6 Cities Benefiting From AT&T GigaPower Network

SAN FRANCISCO, CA: A handful of Bay Area cities will get a boost in their Internet speeds starting today under a partnership with AT&T, company officials said. AT&T has launched its GigaPower Network that will provide speeds of up to a gigabit per second in parts of San Francisco, San Jose, Dublin, Mountain View, Santa Clara and San Ramon, company officials said.

The Cupertino area already benefits from the service that started last year and there are plans to triple the number of places with the network by the end of the year, according to company officials.

"By expanding GigaPower to additional cities in the Bay Area beyond Cupertino, we are demonstrating our continued commitment to our customers whose appetite for high speed data continues to grow," said Jeni Bell, AT&T's vice president and general manager of Northern California and Northern Nevada. "As the way in which we communicate and seek entertainment become more data-intensive, our customers will benefit from our expansion of our GigaPower service," Bell said.

The company estimates the faster Internet will allow customers to download 25 songs in a second, a TV show in three seconds and a high-definition movie in less than 36 seconds.

"We are proud to have the AT&T GigaPower network and look forward to the new economic and innovation opportunities it will enable for our residents, entrepreneurs and small businesses," Mountain View Vice Mayor Ken Rosenberg said in a statement.

Rosenberg is expected to join AT&T corporate officials, other elected leaders and community members to announce the expansion in Mountain View Tuesday afternoon.
