New Superintendent Chosen By San Francisco Board Of Education

Dr. Maria Su plans to prioritize community trust for San Francisco's schools with a balanced budget.

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Board of Education has appointed Dr. Maria Su as the new superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) in a 6-1 vote.

Dr. Su, who has led the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families (DCYF) for 15 years, will focus on a balanced budget and community trust.

“I am honored to serve as the superintendent,” Su said, emphasizing her commitment to improving educational environments for the district’s 49,000 students.

Board President Matt Alexander praised Su's leadership skills, noting her experience in managing large governmental agencies as vital for the district's stability.

Su will work closely with Deputy Superintendent Dr. Karling Aguilera-Fort, who recently returned to SFUSD after serving in leadership roles in other districts.

Dr. Su’s term is set through June 2026, under an agreement between the City and SFUSD, where she will remain a city employee but report directly to the SFUSD Board.
