SF Celebrates Its Iconic Ferry Building At Special Event

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — The weekend is just around the corner, and one way to spend it is at San Francisco’s “Ferry Fest” – a celebration of the iconic waterfront fixture’s 127th birthday.

The free, family-friendly event, which gets underway on Sunday, July 13 from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., will feature live music from Bay Area artists such as Big Blu Soul Revue, Liv Belda and Prophet Martian and special offerings from Ferry Building merchants, including Acme Bread Company, Gott’s Roadside and Bay Crossings.

Located at the foot of Market Street on the Embarcadero and known for its clock tower, the Ferry Building initially opened in 1898 and was a major transportation hub. In 2003, after undergoing renovations, it became what it currently is today: a massive indoor marketplace of locally owned shops and eateries, coupled with an outdoor Ferry Plaza Farmers Market that occurs weekly on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The Ferry Building “acts as the gateway to San Francisco and as a civic gathering place for residents and tourists alike” and “has become a San Francisco institution that serves as a public destination for the Bay Area’s dynamic food culture,” the Ferry Building website reads.

On July 13, 2023, when the waterfront landmark celebrated its 125th anniversary, Mayor London Breed proclaimed July 13 as “Ferry Building Day” in the city, according to the Ferry Building website.

The festival on Sunday will be an in-person honoring of the special day.
