Elderly Woman Brutally Attacked; Carjacker Drives Wrong Way On Highway; Heat Records Fall

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA — As we head into the new week, we've rounded up the stories you may have missed Saturday and Sunday to prepare you for Monday.

But before we jump into Northern California's top stories, residents should know that heat records were broken or matched Sunday across the Bay Area and beyond, surpassing temperatures from a heat wave that hit nearly 100 years ago, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will begin to drop this week.

"Warm again today, but temperatures are on the decline this week," NWS San Francisco forecasters wrote Monday. "Excessive heat warnings have been downgraded to heat advisories inland, and the heat advisory along the coast is no longer in effect."

In other news, a Bay Area woman is accused of brutally attacking an elderly woman in her home, authorities said. Schauntel Marina Gomez, 37, of Milpitas was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse.

A former sheriff's deputy in the Bay Area was convicted of first-degree murder for the shooting deaths of two people in September 2022. Devin Williams was found guilty of going to the victims' house and killing them with his service weapon, according to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

A man is accused of carjacking a woman in the North Bay and driving on the wrong side of Highway 101, authorities said. The woman jumped out of the van and ran to the sidewalk.
