📰 News we're reading

1. Were medical records forged in SLO County teen's death? Jury couldn't decide (sanluisobispo.com) — A San Luis Obispo County jury has deadlocked on whether a former psychiatric technician falsified medical records after a 19-year-old Paso Robles woman died at the county’s Crisis Stabilization Unit. Prosecutors allege the worker charted normal breathing despite video suggesting otherwise, while the defense says she followed facility policy. A January hearing will decide whether the misdemeanor case is dismissed or retried.

2. Cal Poly's Rose Parade Float Entry Enters the Home Stretch (ksby.com) — Cal Poly students in San Luis Obispo are putting final touches on their “Jungle Jumpstart” float for the 2026 Rose Parade, built in partnership with Cal Poly Pomona. The rainforest-themed design, highlighting teamwork between nature and technology, will soon head to Pasadena and be covered in more than 21,000 flowers, continuing the university’s long award-winning float tradition.

3. Peter Thompson to Lead Central Coast Water Authority (noozhawk.com) — San Luis Obispo County’s link to State Water Project supplies is getting new leadership, as Peter Thompson is set to take over the Central Coast Water Authority, which operates the Polonio Pass Water Treatment Plant. CCWA delivers supplemental state water to both San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Thompson, a veteran water manager, will step in as executive director in May 2026.

4. Lights, Camera, Action: 28 new films coming to California (ladowntownnews.com) — San Luis Obispo is among several California locations set to host filming for new projects receiving state film tax credits, meaning potential local shoots and short-term economic boosts. The governor’s office says 28 productions will share incentives, supporting thousands of jobs and hundreds of shoot days statewide, including work outside the traditional Los Angeles zone.

5. Ditch the antibacterial soap this cold and flu season (popsci.com) — San Luis Obispo’s wastewater plant likely suffered a costly nitrification shutdown in 2020, possibly tied to antibacterial chemicals washing down local drains.
