In a time when we are in shock from Covid, war, and escalating climate crisis conditions, it is more important than ever to come together as a community to practice mindfulness and gratitude for our earth, and April as the month of Earth Day, is the perfect time to do this. A wonderful celebration with this focus is planned for this weekend, Saturday, April 23rd in Bolinas Park in Fairfax from 12-5. It is sponsored by Fairfax Park and Recreation.

Earth Celebration” is a free, family-friendly festival with the sweet acoustic music of local guitarist, Teja Gerken, a budding band of 20+ year-olds called “Earth Mother’s Children” and others along with local student dancers, beautiful art for sale, a blessing by Miwok ancestor, Lucina Vidauri, presentations by “Lorax Project” environmental science students of Archie Williams High School, wise man wildlife guide Nick Nutu’s sharing of his knowledge of local flora’s medicinal and edible properties, food and more. This is happening in tandem with an event at the Fairfax library from 2-4 where more educational and fun activities like planting sun flowers are set to take place.

In west Marin there is also an earth day celebration on Sunday, The 13th Annual Point Reyes Birding and Nature Festival, Sunday, April 24, 2022 from 2pm – 5pm and you can get more info and tickets by calling 415-663-9312 . A number of other earth day events are listed here, in Patch, as well.

To wrap up April, Fairfax Open Space is also hosting an iNaturalist BioBlitz on Saturday, April 30th from 9:30 to 11:30 as part of the Nationwide City Challenge. This event will teach participants about local nature, by using their iphone to explore, catalog, and document local nature. So this is a reminder to take care of yourself by taking care of and honoring your home: planet earth. Coming out means coming together with a common and important commitment, it is a great way of transitioning from the isolation of the pandemic, reconnecting and finding grounds to move forward towards creating solutions.

Such ‘grounding’ is essential in these times, and what better way than to do it as a community.
