Bomb Squad Comes to Fairfax

Inert hand grenade found on Wood Lane.

Residents within 100 feet of a hand grenade found on Wood Lane Tuesday night were evacuated until the Bomb Squad from the UC Berkeley Police Department were able to asses the situation, said Fairfax Police Chief Chris Morin.

According to police, a resident on Wood Lane found a "pineapple" style hand grenade while doing yard work around 6:30 p.m. He had recently purchased his home and was cleaning out an old wood pile.

Fairfax Police officers and Ross Valley Fire Department officers responded and evacuated all residents within a 100-foot blast radius while waiting for the UC Berkeley Bomb Squad.

Members of the bomb squad arrived at 8:06 p.m., according to Morin, and assessed the situation. They determined it was a U.S. Military inert "pineapple" grenade. The body of the grenade had been cored out, meaning it was most likely used for training and was incapable of detonating.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes at 8:30 p.m.
