Fairfax Weighs Skate Park's Fate

The town has issued a survey seeking the public's input on the future of the skate park that opened as a temporary site April 10.

FAIRFAX, CA — A proposed permanent Fairfax Community Skate Park has the blessings of a key town agency. Now town officials wants to know what residents think of the idea.

The town has issued a survey seeking the public’s input on the future of the skate park that opened as a temporary site for skaters and scooter riders on April 10.

The Town Council in early March officially designated a section of the Fairfax Pavilion parking lot on Bank Street as a temporary site.

“This action was inspired by concerned community members who know how hard the last year has been on our youth,” town officials said in a statement.

“Creating a local space to be outside, get exercise and see friends in person is a huge win!”

The Fairfax Community Skate Park was 100 percent community funded and was built by volunteer workers.

Some of the funds raised for the skate park was used to provide more than 20 kids with skating equipment kits that included safety gear and free skating lessons.

Over the summer Fairfax Recreation offered two half day skate camps and will offer an after school skate club in the fall of 2021.

The Council approved the community skate park as a one-year pilot with a six-month check-in with the community and council.

The Parks and Recreation Committee (PARC) has recommended the current site become a permanent skate park.

The proposal is for a permanent site to be at the same location as the current temporary skatepark.

The survey aims to measure of how this space has worked so far and what impact, if any, the small parking spaces has impacted downtown parking.

“We are asking for your feedback so that PARC can share what the community would like to see happen in regard to making the current location permanent, at the October Council meeting,” town officials said.
