Marin Unemployment Remains Lowest in State

While county unemployment drops to 7.8 percent, still not as pre-recession numbers.

Unemployment rose slightly in California in August, but remains below the state average in the Bay Area, the California Employment Development Department.

The state unemployment rate rose slightly from 12 percent in July
to 12.1 percent last month, employment department officials said, but is slightly lower than the August 2010 rate of 12.4. Marin's unemployment rate dropped from 8.2 percent in July to 7.8 percent in August. By comparison, Marin's unemployment rate was 8.4 percent August 2010.

According to The Marin Independent Journal, Marin's unemployment rate - while the lowest in the state - has not returned to the pre-recession rate of 3.9 percent in August 2007.

The U.S. unemployment rate remains unchanged since July at 9.1 percent.

In the nine-county Bay Area, unemployment remains below the state average, but some counties are above the national average, according to EDD figures for August. Marin County had the lowest rate at 7.8 percent, followed by San Mateo County at 8.3 percent. Solano County had the highest unemployment rate in the Bay Area at 11.6 percent.
