Mill Valley Man Arrested for Assault in Fairfax

Assault with cane on Meernaa Avenue leads to arrest Wednesday afternoon.

A Mill Valley man was arrested Wednesday afternoon on Meernaa Avenue, near Ivy Lane, in Fairfax for assault with a deadly weapon with great bodily injury likely.

According to Fairfax Sgt. Stuart Baker, Michael Daniel Stone, 47, attacked a man in his 70s with a cane around 3:45 p.m. Police responded promptly to reports from eye-witnesses of the attack and arrived on the scene as the suspect was fleeing. The elderly man was transported to the hospital for "serious, but non-life-threatening injuries," said Baker.

Because of the relationship between the assailant and victim, Baker said he wasn't able to give details of what prompted the assault in order to protect the man attacked, except to note that the two men knew each other and had a prior relationship.

"It was not a random attack," said Baker.

A number of neighbors in the area witnessed the attack and one driver slammed on his brakes in the middle of the street, according to reports, in order to call police. Because the Fairfax Police Station is very close to where the assault happened, officers were able to be on site within minutes.
