Rifles Stolen from Sky Oaks Ranger Station

Locked sheriff's vehicles broken into.

Two semi-automatic patrol rifles were stolen from a locked garage at the Sky Oaks Ranger Station, near the entrance to the Marin Municipal Water District watershed, above Fairfax, according to the sheriff's office.

Officers said they discovered on Tuesday that unknown suspects had broken into a locked garage at the ranger station, just off Bolinas Road. The sheriff's patrol vehicles for the watershed -- two pick-up trucks -- were in the garage with rifles inside the trucks. (The sheriff's office provides two deputies for the watershed area per a contract with MMWD.)

According the sheriff's office, the suspects broke into the two locked cars and forcibly removed, by destroying the lock mounts, two Rock River Arms LAR-15 semi-automatic patrol rifles. A limited amount of ammunition was also taken.

It is unknown, at this time, if anything else was taken from the garage, though it does appear additional cars were rifled through.

Lt. Barry Heying said it is no longer the practice for the rifles to be left in the patrol vehicles parked at the garage.
