Does the City Need to Refocus 'Focus' Newsletter?

The community services director has proposed cutting back the number of times throughout the year the city issues its quarterly newsletter. But who really reads these things?

As you've probably seen in your mailbox recently, the city's quarterly newsletter, Focus, has now been sent out to residents for the summer.

This quarter's city newsletter includes information about Fourth of July and the city's fireworks policy, work that has been taking place on the , improvements on tap for and a summary of the city's since the Sept. 9 pipeline explosion. The newsletter also includes handy contact information should you have a problem for the city to fix.

But how many people actually read Focus? Or does it just end up in the recycling bin along with the rest of your junk mail?

That is the question Director Randy Schwartz is pondering as his department considers cutting back the number of times throughout the year the city issues its quarterly newsletter.

Sending out the newsletters three times instead of four times during the year would save the city money, he told the City Council during its budget study session Tuesday.

And, frankly, it's not that clear who reads these things. Although people who do read the newsletters do seem to say they find them useful.
