10-Year Sentence For Man Convicted In Deadly 2022 San Bruno Crash
A San Francisco man pleaded no contest to felony vehicular manslaughter after hitting and killing someone while fleeing from police.
SAN BRUNO, CA — A San Francisco man faces 10 years in prison after fleeing from police at a San Bruno Mall and causing a deadly crash, according to the district attorney's office.
Prosecutors announced the sentencing terms Tuesday for Matthew Fredricksen, 35, stemming from the crash that killed Mikhail Maalouli, 59, on June 19, 2022.
According to the DA, Fredricksen waited in an SUV for a man who had shoplifted items from The Shops at Tanforan Center, then fled at high speed after an officer attempted to pull the pair over in the parking lot. Police called off the pursuit as Fredricksen drove more than 60 mph in a 25 mph zone, shortly before he ran a red light and t-boned into a vehicle driven by Maalouli, according to prosecutors.

Investigators determined Fredricksen was driving a stolen Toyota Highlander and said he appeared to be under the influence of fentanyl during his arrest. His 10-year sentence includes credit for time served, and the court ordered him to pay more than $500 in restitution to Target, $2,085 to the Victims Compensation Board and an amount to be determined to Maalouli's family.
