Report: PG&E's Safety Record Not Stellar
Newspaper report points out that since 1986 PG&E has had more than 100 significant incidents, causing 18 deaths and 64 injuries.
According to a report in the San Jose Mercury News, which looked at federal data from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, PG&E's track record includes 132 "significant incidents" involving natural gas lines.
The report, which lists 18 deaths and 64 injuries since 1986, also states that the California Public Utilities Commission did an audit in 2008 and found weaknesses in how PG&E was training field workers on using gas detection equipment.
A consumer group, The Utility Reform Network, has also raised questions about how well PG&E inspected gas distribution lines.
