San Bruno Man Dies Diving for Abalone Along Mendocino Coast

One of the two San Mateo County residents who died last weekend in separate abalone diving accidents was 50-year-old San Bruno resident Henry Choy.

In all, there were three fatalities in the waters off the Sonoma and Mendocino coasts last weekend.

Acording to Terra.com authorities said low tides brought out large numbers of abalone divers and rough conditions created dangerous riptides.  In Choy’s case, conditions were so rough a helicopter had to be called in.

Choy was free diving for abalone near Fort Bragg in Mendocino County when he died.  His body was recovered 15 feet below the surface.

The other San Mateo County resident who died was 66-year-old Pacifica resident Cedric Collett, a retired fire fighter.

A third diver, 36-year-old Kenneth Liu of San Francisco also died while diving for abalone near Jenner in Sonoma County.
