School Board to Decide on Teacher Cuts

Eight teachers could receive pink slips. The board also plans to lay off a number of pre-school teachers and aides as a result of declining school funding.

None of the San Bruno Park school trustees say they want to give teachers pink slips. 

But as a result of school funding shortages, that’s what they’ll have to do at the Wednesday.

At the meeting, the school board is expected to announce the layoffs of eight teachers throughout the school district—four fewer than first anticipated.

Four pre-school teachers and six pre-school aides at will also be laid off, in addition to a pre-school teacher at and a pre-school supervisor and two pre-school aides at . The school district will also be reducing the hours for three clerical assistants. 

All of the cuts are mostly the result of the state’s , which Gov. Jerry Brown has had a difficult time closing. His proposal to put three tax extensions up for a vote during a special election has failed to get full approval from the state Legislature.

Meanwhile teachers from throughout the state—including some from the San Bruno Education Association—have participated in a weeklong “State of Emergency” campaign to urge state legislators to support increases that would prevent the need for additional cuts.
