Caltrain Switching To Renewable Energy At 100 Percent

The transit organization's Board of Directors enrolled in the San Jose Clean Energy plan to provide energy through renewable resources.

SAN CARLOS, CA -- Come 2019, Caltrain will power itself off renewable energy sources, the Board of Directors announced this week.

Caltrain opted in last March with five other Community Clean Energy programs throughout its corridor that have provided about half of the electricity used by the system.

The intent is to eliminate about 660 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. This is the equivalent of the annual carbon footprint of over 1.6 million passenger vehicle miles at a cost only 4.8 percent higher than it would have been with PG&E.

The maneuver follows the state signing Senate Bill 100 into law. It requires that by 2045 California's electricity all originates from greenhouse gas-free sources.
