SamTrans, Caltrain Proclaim June 21 'Dump the Pump Day'

SamTrans and Caltrain have joined forces to declare that June 21st be known as 'Dump The Pump Day.'

SAN CARLOS, CA - From SamTrans: SamTrans and Caltrain are inviting Bay Area drivers to leave their cars at home and give public transportation a try as part Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 21.

This year marks the 13th annual National Dump the Pump Day, which is all about demonstrating the value and ease of opting to ride public transportation over driving a car. The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) launched the campaign in 2006 as a way to get people out of their cars when gas prices soared ever more skyward.

To commemorate the day, both the SamTrans and Caltrain Board of Directors at their June meetings proclaimed June 21 as Dump the Pump Day and encouraged everyone to ride public transportation, save money and help reduce fuel emissions.

According to APTA’s June Transit Savings Report, a two-person household can save, on the average, $10,160 a year by downsizing to one car.

SamTrans and Caltrain is inviting the public to join the agencies at a Dump the Pump event on Thursday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Millbrae Caltrain Station’s southbound platform. Visitors will be treated to a morning of games, prizes, and music from a local radio DJ. Attendees can also learn all about Route SFO, SamTrans’ new direct bus service from Millbrae Transit Center to San Francisco International Airport. The bus, which launches on Sunday, June 24, and is outfitted with extra luggage racks, will be onsite to view.
