Why is My Recycling Bin Being Weighed?

Some San Carlos residents will have their recycling/composting carts weighed this week to help develop a Home Diversion Calculator.

To help San Carlos residents determine how much recycling and compost materials they set out each week, RethinkWaste is developing a web-based calculator that will measure the contents of their blue and green carts.

This Thursday, a RethinkWaste contractor, R.J. Proto Consulting Group, will be weighing compost, recycle and garbage carts in randomly selected neighborhoods throughout San Carlos. The results of the weighing project will be used to develop the web-based Home Diversion Calculator.

Residential Cart Weighing will occur on Thursday, April 18, 2013 from 6:30 am to 12:00 pm.

Selected carts will be weighed on the customer's regular collection day before they are serviced by Recology San Mateo County.

RethinkWaste is noted that regular collection time may be later than usual to allow for the carts to be weighed, but Recology will service them on the regular collection day.

As carts are weighed, the contractor will lift the lid of the carts to determine how full they are. They will not inspect the contents of what is in the cart.

The data from the cart weighing will be used to build the Home Diversion Calculator to be launched in June on the RethinkWaste.org website.

The easy-to-use calculator will allow any single-family home resident to enter how full each cart is on any given week, and receive their diversion percentage for that week. The goal is to get residents to recycle and compost as much as they can.

Households with high diversion rates will receive recognition for their efforts.

The Home Diversion Calculator will kick off in June 2013.
