Football: JSerra 52, Buena Park 13

JSerra, living large in the Orange County Top 10 for the first time in the school’s history, turned in a solid performance Friday at Saddleback College to send Buena Park to its first defeat. The Lions matched their pride of playmakers against the county’s leading rusher, Deven Boston, and won their eighth consecutive nonleague game.

Key Stats: Casey Eugenio rushed 19 times for 178 yards and scored four touchdowns.

Pivotal Moment: Despite scoring 21 in the first quarter, it was still a game in the third quarter when Eugenio scored three times in a span of 132 seconds. He scored from 5, 14 and 40 yards to make it 42-13.

Quotable: “We got to clean up our penalties and keep drives alive,” JSerra coach Jim Hartigan told the Orange County Register. “You’re not going to be able to play catch-up in the Trinity, so we got some things to clean up in the next couple of weeks.”

Notes:  In addition to his third quarter explosion, Eugenio opened the scoring with a 29-yard touchdown run. … Dante Pettis was overshadowed by Eugenio, but the Lions playmaker did plenty to put his mark on the outcome. He blocked a punt and carried it into the end zone from 3 yards to make it 14-0, and took a 33-yard pass from Nick Robinson to make it 21-0. The duo hooked up again in the third quarter for a 39-yard score. … JSerra did a fantastic job on the county’s leading rusher, Deven Boston. The Lions limited Boston to 60 yards on 13 carries—one of them for 20 yards. He scored both Buena Park touchdowns, on runs of 2 and 1 yard. … In his first three games, Boston had gained 323, 253 and 300 yards. … Buena Park netted 76 yards rushing, 136 passing against the Lions defense. … JSerra is No. 9 in the Orange County Top 10 poll.
