Now in High School: Sports Medicine
A new ROP course at San Juan Hills and Dana Hills will offer insight into the growing field this fall.
For the first time, sports medicine course will be taught at and Dana Hills High School,Β starting in the fall.Β
TheΒ Β is currently hiring teachers for the program, which has proven popular at other campuses.
βWe anticipate moving our highly qualified San Juan Hills candidate for board approval in August. We currently have another position to fill at DHHS,β saidΒ Dave Giertych, director of Instructional Services for Capistrano-Laguna Beach ROP.Β

ROP is a WASC-accredited and state-funded education program that prepares students for career and technical-oriented fields.Β
βYou get to take a potential career for a test drive,β Giertych said.

βThere is a lot of student interest in this. Students are hoping to major in kinesiology and sports medicine,β he added.
The class will offer hand-on training with instructors who are athletic trainers, Giertych said. People who have worked in the specific fields of study teach the ROP courses.
βWe have over 300 local businesses that are assisting us with student internships,β said Giertych.
The ROP Sports Medicine course has been available at other schools for more than 10 years. It is currently offered at , Β and schools.
ROP teachers nominated more than 70 students for the this year. Many of the Capistrano-Laguna Beach ROP most distinguished students were honored for their work in medical courses including:
- Health Careers
- Medical Terminology
- Emergency Medical Responder
- Medical Assistant
In addition to learning about athletic training and gaining an βintroduction to care, prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries,β students will learn about βstrength and conditioning principles relative to fitness clubs, athletic training rooms, physical therapy clinics, YMCAs and chiropractic offices,β according to the ROP course description.
βThere are over 4,500 students enrolled in our classes,β Giertych said.Β ROP offers classes as part of the studentsβ school day, as well as courses outside the school that offer a more regional approach to teaching.Β
