Therapeutic Horseback Riding Making a Difference [Video]
A look at how the Shea Center in San Juan Capistrano is brightening the lives of children and adults with disabilities.

The Shea Center in San Juan Capistrano helps more than 200 people a week with disabilities including 3-year-old Riley.
"She has a rare genetic disorder that is like a combination of cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, and cerebral palsy. She has a high risk for cancer. It’s degenerative, she’s three now but by age five, six or seven, she’s going to need a walker, then a wheelchair and her life expectancy is short. But we’re hoping this helps," said Erica Rahall, Riley’s mom.Â
Riley physical therapist Grace Hernandez has seen an improvement in Riley since she started coming to the center a little over a year ago. "She loves being down here, the horse brightens her up, she's much more talkative on the horse. Her main issue is her balance, this is a perfect tool for her to work on her balance and core," explained Hernandez who has worked at the Shea Center for 21 years.Â

Therapeutic riding is available for anyone over the age of two and up. "I think we had a gentleman in his 80’s ride, so there’s a huge range of ages," said Hernandez.
Volunteers also range in age. To volunteer you must be at least 14. There are more than 200 volunteers each week at the Shea Center. Â Â
