Despite rumors in the local press that the San Marino post office could be closed in the near future, a postal spokesman says no closure is planned.
The Pasadena Star-News reported Tuesday that the branch will not close and U.S. Postal Service spokesman Richard Maher confirmed that in an interview with Patch.
Relocation of a post office within a community or nearby would require a public hearing with a notice and a 30-day public comment period, Maher noted, while an actual branch closure would require multiple public hearings, a 60-day public comment period and a 30-day appeal period. No notice of any hearings has been issued for the San Marino office.
Maher noted that the carrier operations could be moved to a Pasadena facility but that would not impact retail front counter services in the San Marino branch. The Star-News has more detail on that potential move.
The San Marino Tribune first reported on July 30 that local postal employees were saying that branch would close.
In 2011, similar reports based on local employee comments suggested that the Altadena Post Office would close. The branch is still open.
