3 Finalists Selected For SMC Sheriff To Replace Ousted Predecessor

The board of supervisors are looking to quickly replace the sheriff after removing the previous over misconduct allegations.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors publicly interviewed candidates to fill the sheriff position and have narrowed the finalists down to three names.

After the Board of Supervisors voted to remove Sheriff Christina Corpus on Oct. 14, they now have begun the search for her replacement.

The three finalists selected are Kenneth Binder, an interim chief of police for Gilroy and former undersheriff at the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office; David Lazar, a retired assistant chief for the San Francisco Police Department; and Brian Wynn Huynh Travis, the chief of police and director of Public Safety for the Solano Community College District.

After holding a special meeting Thursday where they interviewed six candidates, the supervisors voted to select the three finalists.

The three finalists took part in a public question and answer session on Monday.

"We really appreciate the level of community interest and participation," said Board of Supervisors President David Canepa. "Monday’s forum was an important step, and we look forward to hearing from residents again before the Board makes its decision."

The supervisors are expected to select the next sheriff at their next meeting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

"Tonight is another important step towards transparent and ethical leadership for our Sheriff’s Office," said Supervisor Noelia Corzo. "I’m grateful for the voices of our county residents in this process and hope that you’ll join us for the final meeting on Wednesday at 9 a.m."
