Suspect In Pursuit Fatally Struck On San Mateo-Hayward Bridge

CHP issued a SigAlert closing all eastbound lanes at 4:46 a.m.

SAN MATEO, CA — A suspect who led authorities on a pursuit that started in Half Moon Bay early Wednesday morning ended up being struck and killed on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported at 4:32 a.m. Sept. 21, on the eastbound side of the bridge and came after the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office initially pursued a 2020 white Ford Mustang from Half Moon Bay to Pacifica but lost sight of the vehicle on Interstate Highway 280, CHP officials said.

San Mateo police picked up the pursuit on eastbound state Highway 92 but lost sight of the vehicle as well near Edgewater Boulevard. Minutes later, there were reports of a collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian on eastbound Highway 92 on the bridge west of the toll plaza and the white Ford was found at the scene, according to the CHP.

The pedestrian struck matched the description of the suspect in the pursuit, and investigators determined the Ford may have run out of gas and the driver fled on foot, then was struck by a passing vehicle, CHP officials said.

The collision initially blocked all eastbound lanes on the bridge. As of about 6 a.m., the far left lane had reopened but the other lanes remained closed, according to the CHP.
