First Woman Promoted To Captain In This San Mateo County Police Department

The former captain was named the Chief of Police in San Bruno.

SAN MATEO, CA — After the recent departure of a captain who became a police chief at another department, the San Mateo Police Department promoted a woman to fill the position for the first time June 17.

Captain Jen Maravillas will take over the role for Matt Lehin, who was named the Chief of Police of the San Bruno Police Department.

Maravillas assumed her role as captain Sunday. In December, she will have worked for the SMPD for 20 years. Maravillas is originally from San Mateo. She came to the SMPD in 2005 after transferring from the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office.

She was one of two female lieutenants on the command staff prior to the promotion. She was hired by former police chief Susan Manheimer, making Maravillas the second highest ranking woman in the SMPD’s 118-year history.

Also promoted was Steve Casazza to patrol lieutenant and Kevin Brazil to patrol sergeant.

“I’m incredibly proud to announce the promotions of Captain Jen Maravillas, Lieutenant Steve Casazza, and Sergeant Kevin Brazil. Each of these individuals exemplifies the dedication, leadership, and professionalism that define our department. I’m confident they will continue to serve our community with integrity, compassion, and respect in their new roles,” said Ed Barberini, San Mateo Police Chief.

An official promotion ceremony will be held later this year.
