It’s Time to Be “Foodware Aware”!
New Foodware Ordinance Aims to Reduce Plastic Pollution!

Did you know that one of the biggest contributors to plastic pollution is the foodware that holds your next to-go meal. To address the problem of plastic pollution and protect public health, the County of San Mateo and several jurisdictions therein, including the City of San Mateo, have adopted a Disposable Foodware Ordinance that starts October 1, 2022.
The Ordinance requires restaurants and other food facilities (e.g., farmer's markets, food trucks, push carts, cafeterias, groceries, etc.) to eliminate disposable plastic foodware and replace it with compostable alternatives made from natural fiber such as paper, sugarcane, bamboo, or other mixed fiber pulp. Cups, bowls, take-out containers, utensils, and straws are just some of the common disposable foodware items that are impacted by the new Ordinance. Reusable foodware is highly encouraged.
Remember to ask for utensils, condiment packets, napkins, or other small side items (a.k.a. accessories) when ordering food, especially takeout. Aligning with the new state law AB 1276, accessories such as utensils, straws, and toothpicks can now only be distributed by request and/or at one-at-a-time dispensers, except for drive-throughs and airports.
