Laurel Elementary Students Bring Home National Math Olympiads Awards

After working hard in weekly practice sessions dating all the way back to November, several students from in the San Mateo-Foster City School District saw their hard work pay off recently when they brought home awards in the recent national Math Olympiads.

The Math Olympiads take place every year in the spring, and this year, students from Laurel Elementary faced nearly 15,000 competitors.

While all students received certificates for their participation, several Laurel students took home national honors for excellence in Division E, for grades 4-6.

Elias Lewin-Koh was awarded the silver pin, given to those in the top 10 percent of their age division. Students Nathan A., Sammy David, Lila Dickson, Kathryn Jia, Thomas Karpishin, Lee Moyer, Connor Nordell and Carson Shek were awarded embroidered felt patches, given to those the top 50 percent of all participants. 

Laurel Elementary Principal Susan Glines expressed her pride over the Laurel Mathletes' hard work and accomplishments.

"These students rank among the best mathematics students at Laurel School," she said. "They solved a variety of very difficult problems with eagerness and enthusiasm. I am also thankful for the dedicated parent coaches who consistently held practice once a week to help these students reach their potential." 

The Math Olympiads have been taking place each year since 1979.
