Peninsula Safeway Stabbing Suspect’s Trial Date Set: DA

The stabbing occurred at the Sequoia Station shopping center on Oct. 4, 2020, the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office said.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A trial date has been set for the suspect in a 2020 Redwood City Safeway stabbing, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Marcus Alan Stewart, 52 of Redwood City, has been charged with attempted murder and using a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony or attempted felony, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

Stewart is being held in lieu of $510,000 bail.

The case is set for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 28 for the trial readiness conference and for jury trial assignment. The setting of Stewart’s jury trial date is the first since his May 12 arraignment.

Stewart is accused of stabbing a stranger who he mistakenly thought was talking to him while he was speaking to someone else on his cell phone, the DA’s Office said.

The stabbing occurred at the Sequoia Station shopping center on Oct. 4, 2020, the DA’s Office said.

Stewart and his alleged victim began arguing and fighting inside the Safeway store, prosecutors said.

After the altercation spilled outside the store, Stewart allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed the victim three times, according to prosecutors.

Stewart stabbed his alleged victim twice in the chest, narrowly missing his heart, and also in his arm, cutting an artery and causing profuse bleeding, prosecutors said.

The victim underwent emergency surgery at Stanford Hospital.

Several witnesses watched the events unfold including a friend of the alleged victim who yelled at Stewart to stop. Another witness recorded video of the altercation on his phone.
