San Mateo City Council Selects Larry Patterson as Interim City Manager

Patterson has served as San Mateo's public works director for more than a decade.

The San Mateo City Council on Tuesday appointed Larry Patterson, San Mateo Public Works Director, as Interim City Manager in preparation for the upcoming retirement of City Manager, Susan Loftus on Nov. 1.

Patterson will step into this position on Oct. 15 and will serve in this leadership capacity for about six months as the City conducts a search to fill the City Manager position.

The City is planning a two week overlap that will help to facilitate a smooth transition as Patterson prepares for his new responsibilities.

Patterson has served as San Mateo’s Public Works Director for 13 years, where he has provided leadership to a department of 130 employees and oversight of an annual operating budget of $12 Million and a Capital Improvement Budget that ranges from $12 to $30 Million annually. 

Patterson’s leadership is an asset within the City organization, and he is well-respected throughout the San Mateo community and regionally, according to City officials.

He leads a number of intra-departmental committees and projects including the implementation of the City’s Sustainability Plan, reviewing and recommending projects for alternative service delivery methods, and facilitating the negotiation of key development projects including two Transit Oriented Development projects within the City’s Rail Corridor.

Additionally, he led and facilitated Citizens Advisory Committees and has participated in regional initiatives such as the South Bayside Waste Management Authority.
