San Mateo County will now offer mental health support around the clock.
SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — San Mateo County residents experiencing a mental health crisis can now directly reach support through a mobile unit as of Thursday, according to a press release.
Locals can call the San Mateo Crisis line at 650-579-0350 anytime, day or night, to request help for a family member, friend or themselves, experiencing or at risk of a mental health crisis such as substance use issues or thoughts of suicide.
“We want to make sure it’s clear that no matter when or where in the county you are dealing with a behavioral health crisis, there is appropriate support available, and it can come to you when you need it most,” said Dr. Jei Africa, SMC Behavioral Health and Recovery Services director.

Upon calling, behavioral healthcare professionals trained in crisis assessment, deescalation and intervention will be dispatched to their location.
Responders will arrive in nondescript vehicles without light nor sirens around the clock, any day of the year. The goal of the healthcare professionals is to stabilize situations and, when needed, transport residents to appropriate care.

The responders supply follow-up support within 24 hours of the initial call and can facilitate resources such as short- and long-term treatment or assist developing plans for future crises.
If experiencing a medical emergency, residents are still advised to call 9-1-1.
The Board of Supervisor approved a $5 million contract in February 2024 with Telecare Corp., which provides mental health clinicians, to partner with nonprofit StarVista, which operates the call center.
The county started the pilot program in May 2024 and it ran through March 2025. During that time, the unit went out 320 times and served 220 clients. Response times of 60 minutes are expected in central county areas and 90 minutes on the coast.
