San Mateo, CA – Assemblymember Diane Papan has named the San Mateo Public Library Foundation (SMPLF) as the Nonprofit of the Year in the 21st Assembly District. The Foundation was honored on June 5, 2024, at the annual Nonprofit of the Year event held on the lawn of the California State Capitol by the California Association of Nonprofits, celebrating the remarkable contributions of nonprofits across the state.

The San Mateo Public Library Foundation was incorporated in 1994 with an initial mission to raise over $10 million for a new library building, which opened its doors in 2006. Since then, the Foundation has evolved into a dynamic annual giving organization, funding a wide array of projects that maintain library hours, provide outreach services, and enhance the tech lending library collection. At its core, the Foundation’s mission is to offer unrestricted funds to the Library, enabling the provision of exceptional programming beyond what public funding allows. Through diverse events—from galas to festivals—the Foundation not only raises funds but also engages the broader community, expanding the circle of library users, advocates, and donors.

"The San Mateo Public Library Foundation exemplifies the power of community support and dedication,” said Papan. “Their unwavering commitment to enhancing library services and fostering educational and cultural enrichment has made a profound difference in the lives of many. It is an honor to recognize their outstanding contributions to our community and celebrate their achievements."
