SMC Hosts Disaster Preparedness Day Next Month
Peninsula families are invited to the event center next month for some all-ages learning, hands-on fun and free hot dogs.
REDWOOD CITY, CA — San Mateo County is preparing to host its annual Disaster Preparedness Day, inviting families to pick up some life-saving knowledge, while feasting on free hot dogs, meeting first responders, and having a little fun next month.
The family-friendly event is scheduled to return to the San Mateo County Event Center for its 19th year on Aug. 5.
Attendees of all ages will have ample opportunities to check out workshops about how to create family communication plans and assemble emergency supply kids, with local experts on hand to host classes on CPR, first aid and fire safety. Kids and adults can also get hands-on with emergency vehicles and take a few selfies with local firefighters and police officers.

"The time to start thinking about your family's risks is today, not when the creeks are rising or there's smoke on the horizon," said Don Mattei, director of the county's Department of Emergency Management. "Our goal is to support families and communities in becoming self-sufficient in emergency preparedness, enabling them to survive and recover from a disaster as efficiently as possible."

Inside the exhibit hall, attendees will find displays hosted by public safety agencies and support groups, including the American Red Cross and San Mateo Large Animal Evac. Activities and giveaways for kids include free flashlights, children's books, and toy fire helmets, plus the chance to walk through a simulated smoke tunnel.
