Woman Dies After Being Run Over In Peninsula Safeway Parking Lot

A Safeway employee who had previously been charged with attempted homicide in the Sept. 20 incident had the charge upgraded to homicide.

MILLBRAE, CA — A woman who was run over in a Safeway parking lot in Millbrae on Sept. 20 succumbed to her injuries Wednesday, and the employee who had been charged with attempted homicide had the charged upgraded to homicide.

Garrett Young, 23, was accused of driving a gray BMW SUV into the victim, identified as 53-year-old Gryselda Joseph, at a "high rate of speed" and then running her over "several more times," according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's department.

Deputies later found the vehicle and Young parked in front of a residence on Henry Place, and they determined that he was the suspect, according to the sheriff's department.

Joseph frequented the Safeway and Young was upset that she was yelling at him about the women's bathroom and other areas of his responsibility over recent months, according to prosecutors.

Joseph had been on life support since Sept. 20.

Young's trial is on hold until he undergoes a competency assessment, according to the Mercury News.
