Coroner Works To Identify Both Bodies Discovered Among Fire Remains In Marin County

Two bodies were found after a fire destroyed an apartment complex, displacing over 50 residents.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — The coroner said that due to the extensive physical injuries to both bodies found on Friday and Sunday in the rubble of a San Rafael fire, they have not been able to confirm their identities yet and it will require a team of experts.

At around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, the San Rafael Fire Department responded to a major fire at an apartment complex at 516 Canal St. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials said.

After the fire was extinguished, two people remained unaccounted for.

On Friday, investigators said they found one dead person on the back side of the building and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division took possession of the remains in hopes to identify them.

On Sunday, a second body was located with the severely damaged structure. The coroner's officer took possession of these remains as well.

"Due to the extensive physiological injuries noted upon both of the victims’ bodies, identification of the deceased remains unconfirmed at this time. Efforts to complete positive scientific based identification are ongoing and will require the assistance of many subject matter specialists," said Roger Fielding, the chief deputy coroner.

Once they have identified the bodies and contacted next of kin, their names will be released to the public, officials said.

"We remain appreciative of everyone’s understanding and patience as we work most efficiently and diligently to aid these victims and their family," the coroner's office stated.
