Man Arrested After Firing Gun, Making Threats In San Rafael: Police

Police said the man fired a shot into the air and pointed a gun at a cyclist on a San Rafael trail.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — Police arrested a man Tuesday accused of firing a handgun and threatening people on the Starkweather Shoreline Pathway in San Rafael. According to police, 911 calls started coming before 1:45 p.m. about a man with a gun near the 2100 block of Francisco Boulevard East. Witnesses said he fired a gun and was brandishing the weapon and making threats to people on the path.

Officers arrived at the scene in a few minutes and set up a perimeter around where the man was last seen. Investigators said they found the man hiding near a building in under 10 minutes, and he was taken into custody without incident.

Police identified the suspect as Jose Arguello-Gutierrez, 59, of San Rafael.

Officials said he did not have a gun with him when he was arrested, but it was later recovered with ammunition nearby. Investigators returned to the area where witnesses said the incident occurred and found a bullet casing that matched the gun they found.

Officers also reviewed surveillance video that officers said showed Arguello-Gutierrez pointing the gun at a cyclist's head.

Police said he was familiar to the department and was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of several felony charges.
