Marin County Is Home To High Level Of Racial Disparity: Report

MARIN COUNTY -- A report released this month by the Advancement Project California found with the rise of success, comes a rise in disparity too. The rule is true for Marin County, a region that the nonprofit said was the highest performing county in California but also home to the highest level of racial disparity.

The report, titled "Race Counts: A Golden State for All of Us," examines racial equity in three areas: performance, disparity and impact.

Researchers closely monitored communities in the Bay Area and found that disparity is high.

"The Bay Area is a cautionary tale to other parts of the state because its experience shows that a rising tide does not by itself lift all boats and that great prosperity will not necessarily be broadly shared," the report wrote. "New systems for equity will be needed to remedy ongoing injustices and ensure that growth is shared fairly.

"But high racial disparities and a high cost of living mean that people of color are hard-pressed to keep up, leading to many of them being forced out of San Francisco and Alameda by rising rents and forced to attempt to find more affordable homes in outlying counties."

Among the key findings, researchers said "racial disparity drives down performance." In addition, the Black community suffers the most throughout the state and the Latino community is "affected by the largest impact due to population size."
