MARIN COUNTY, CA — A commission assigned to increase transparency and accountability of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office will have its inaugural meeting Monday at the Civic Center.

The Civilian Oversight Commission will have its first meeting at 10 a.m. on Monday suite 330 of the Civic Center located at 3501 Civic Center Dr. in San Rafael.

"The inaugural meeting of the Civilian Oversight Commission marks an important step toward strengthening trust, transparency, and accountability between our community and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office,” said Board of Supervisors President Mary Sackett. “We appreciate the dedication of the commissioners as they embark on their work as well as the Sheriff Office’s collaboration with us in creating this commission.”

The kickoff meeting will serve to introduce commissioners and key staff, appoint a Chair, and establish a regular meeting schedule. Additionally, commissioners will be updated on the Inspector General's recruitment and discuss the commission's orientation and work plan.

The nine-member commission, appointed in June, comprises five district representatives and four at-large members, all Marin residents chosen after extensive outreach.

"We welcome the establishment of this new committee and are optimistic about strengthening the trust between the Sheriff's office and the community we serve," said Marin County Sheriff Jamie Scardina.

The commission oversees Sheriff's operations and policies, reviews complaints, and issues annual reports on community engagement. It also advises on hiring the Inspector General, who supports the Civilian Oversight Commission.
