Marin Opens Severe Weather Emergency Shelter

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Unusually cold and wet weather has prompted the activation of Marin’s Severe Weather Emergency Shelter for people experiencing homelessness, official said.

Marin Health and Human Services (HHS) is opening an overnight shelter from 3 p.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday at the Marin Health and Wellness Campus (3240 Kerner Boulevard, San Rafael).

Those experiencing homelessness can seek temporary relief from the heated San Rafael location.

Individuals are encouraged to sign-in by 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a freeze warning for Marin County, in effect from 11 p.m. Thursday, December 1, through 9 a.m. Friday, December 2, with unseasonably low temperatures continuing through Saturday. Plus, rain is forecast to return over the weekend.

Emergency officials encourage everyone to protect the “4 Ps” from cold:

• People: Wear layers, limit time outdoors, and check heaters in advance. Give special attention to older adults and young children, who can lose body heat more quickly than others.
• Pets: Bring pets indoors at night and provide them with plenty of warmth.
• Plants: Cover or bring in sensitive plants indoors.
• Pipes: Wrap exposed outdoor pipes to prevent freezing.

Also, check that emergency kits are up to date.
