The NUSD’s Virtual Independent Study Program meets the requirements of a newly enacted
state law.
California Assembly Bill 130 requires all school districts to offer remote independent
study for the 2021-2022 school year, EdSource reports.

The NUSD initiated a Virtual Learning Academy during the 2020-2021 academic year.
The NUSD has for many years offered an independent study program through NOVA Independent Study at the Hill Education Center.

The Virtual Independent Study program will be taught by credentialed NUSD teachers and will
include daily live virtual learning in grades TK-8.
For grades 9-12, virtual independent study will comprise of weekly meetings and live
instruction. Field trips and opportunities for extracurricular activities will be available.
Priority for enrollment will be given to NUSD students. Non-NUSD students are welcome to
apply for an interdistrict transfer.
