Marin Supes Honor Volunteers, Interns

MARIN COUNTY, CA — The Marin County Board of Supervisors this week honored 88 volunteers and interns who made significant impacts in the MarinShares volunteers and Marinterns programs, county officials said in a news release.

The group includes three volunteers with 24 years of service each and a legal intern who served more than 2,000 hours.

Supervisors unanimously passed individual resolutions of commendation at their November 8 meeting. Honorees were active in 11 County departments in a wide range of roles.

The interns gained experience in the fields of public policy, health and wellness, the law, social services, child welfare, human resources, administrative support, and epidemiology.

Volunteers investigated financial abuse of elders, wrote newsletter articles, patrolled parks trails, preserved library materials, watched for wildfires, consulted on telehealth matters, helped library patrons, searched for lost hikers, supported restorative justice, ushered Marin Center theatergoers, and advocated for residents of long-term care facilities.

The honorees made significant impacts, completed their assignments, and were recommended for special honors by their immediate staff supervisors.

Marinterns Coordinator Joy Fossett highlighted students’ concern for people in need.

“Intern honorees completed projects in social work, homelessness policy, child welfare, prescription drug misuse, and more,” Fossett said in a statement.

“It’s also exciting that these high school, college, and graduate students gained practical experience. All Marinterns explore public service careers while learning, and our honorees made the most of the opportunity.”

More than 8,100 volunteers and interns served nearly 223,000 hours across County departments, according to the most recent MarinShares and Marinterns annual impact reports.

Participants are active as legal interns, peer counselors, Marin Teen Girl Ambassadors, fire lookouts, Marin Center ushers, consultants in several disciplines, child welfare interns, ombudsmen, parks and open space stewards, graphic designers, senior peer counselors, tutors, event volunteers, student nurses, writers, and much more.

The MarinShares and Marinterns programs engage a diverse group of people who share their talents and energy.
