Marin Woman ID’d As Inmate Who Died In Custody

MARIN COUNTY, CA – An inmate who was found dead Tuesday morning at Marin County Jail has been identified as Julianne Riebeling, 52 of Corte Madera, Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Juan Valencia said.

A deputy performing a routine check on inmates at around 5:25 a.m. found Riebeling hanging in her solely occupied cell, the Sheriff's Office said.

The San Rafael Fire Department was summoned to the jail but despite all lifesaving measures, the inmate was pronounced deceased at 5:45 a.m., the Sheriff's Office said.

At the Sheriff Office's request, the Central Marin Police Authority will investigate the inmate's death and the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office Coroners Division is handling the coroner duties associated with the death.

Riebeling was arrested in June in connection with a robbery after leading authorities on a frantic pursuit in which she tried to elude authorities by swimming in the San Francisco Bay, authorities said.

She was arrested on suspicion of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest according to police.

She was arrested at West Marin Island at the end of a pursuit that involved a US Coast Guard boat, a California Highway Patrol helicopter, and a San Rafael K-9 unit, police said.

Riebeling at around 3:15 p.m. entered Andy's Local Market at 75 Loch Lomond Drive, first throwing items and breaking glass before punching an employee and striking them with a bottle, police said.

Riebeling returned to the store around a half hour later and attempted to strike the employee with a hammer, police said.

As police responded Riebeling ran to the gated community of San Pedro Cove where she cut across the backyard toward the San Rafael Bay shoreline, police said.

She swam to avoid capture after authorities established a perimeter around the area, landing on the southwestern side of West Marin Island according to police.

A Coast Guard boat brought officers to the island and the CHP landed a K-9 unit on the island that assisted in Riebeling's arrest.

The CHP helicopter brought Riebeling back to shore.

Riebeling was booked into Marin County Jail after the San Rafael Fire Department rendered medical aid.
